The Riverfly Partnership

We recently received this appeal from David Bryan who is Secretary of the West Yorkshire branch of the Salmon and Trout Association; we are keen to get involved by providing both volunteers from our membership, and sampling sites on our river lengths. You can find out a lot more about this fascinating and valuable project at www.riverflies.org. If you think that you’d like to spend a day learning a lot more about what’s in our rivers, and are willing to participate in the project by providing sample data on a regular basis, then drop me a line or give me a call.  Continue reading The Riverfly Partnership

Fish Refuges at Coppice Pond

Thanks to all who helped out on Friday and Saturday. The refuges are now planted up and are in place in the Pond. There is a need for these refuges in the absence of natural pond vegetation, to provide cover and escape from predatory birds, for small fish. The vegetative cover is intended to spread, and trail its roots into the  water  so that the refuges will be of use to spawning fish. The refuges have been designed and constructed by Club members, additional funding for this project has come from The Friends of St. Ives, Bradford Metropolitan District Council and Continue reading Fish Refuges at Coppice Pond

Barbel Stocking in River Aire

At the end of November the Environment Ageny stocked 7500 Barbel into the River Aire at various sites, 750 at 3-4″ were stocked at Myrtle Park – some of which are pictured above. Barbel of approximately the same size have been stocked here annually by the Agency since 2009 (approximately 2500 fish by my reckoning), the club also stocked 200 Barbel at 8-10″ in 2007. More EA Barbel are anticipated for the Aire in 2013 and also 2015. See you there, don’t forget your Rod Licence

Fish Shelters at Coppice Pond

A working party will be held at Coppice Pond on 30th December from 10 AM onwards. The aim of the day is to construct and position two further fish refuges. In the absence of natural vegetation in the water, and after receiving expert advice from the Institute of Fisheries Management and the EA; the Club has decided to positon three fish shelters in the pond in order to provide fish with year round cover from predators and possible alternative spawning sites. The refuges are based on commercially available products, but have been designed by the Club Chairman. Construction materials have Continue reading Fish Shelters at Coppice Pond
